過年

過年了。

Last night, I made a ‘year cake’ from the rice powder bought in a Chinese grocery store. I boiled the water, melted the sugar, added the rice powder little by little, stirred it slowly, and then steamed it in the rice cooker.

I told myself that I had to make this cake so that on the New Year's Eve, I can tell my Mom and Grand mom that I have a year cake made by myself. Then they will know that I have a happy Chinese New Year here although I am alone and far away from them.

Yes. With this year cake, I will have a happy Chinese New Year although I am alone and far away from my home town.

那是第一年來到大湖邊，第一個在美國的農曆新年。我用大同電鍋蒸了一個年糕，算是過節。上去BBS，看到許多人抒發隻身在異邦的感觸，不知不覺也有一點鄉愁，所以有了這幾行。紅豆年糕完整不動放了幾天，後來在同學會的potluck上煎一煎被分食個精光，鄉愁的結晶變成同學們口中好廚藝的虛榮。而後，一年又一年，要考試要做實驗要當助教...，事情一多，傷感虛榮通通都無暇出現。還記得有一次，年初一的大清早九點就要帶實驗課，到了中午過後課結束，最後離開的剛好是兩位華裔學生，告別時跟我說了句廣東話，我一時沒聽懂，他又說了一次，還加上Happy New Year，我才連忙會意過來。結果這句恭喜發財，就是那年年節最大的慶賀了。

今年過年，正逢趕著要把論文了結的兵荒馬亂中。小年夜回到家，看到百貨公司達人遠從台北寄給我、及時抵達的包裹。拆箱一看，裡面有乾貨零嘴糖果魷魚絲，還有一個裝著美金一元的紅包袋。看到不禁笑了。

一元復始，萬象更新。不管舊年讓自己滿不滿意，新的一年有新希望。所以新年一定要快樂，大家都一樣！
